The Architecture Program at Georgia Institute of Technology invites you this Wednesday, February 1st, at 5 pm for an open panel discussion on the local parameters that impact affordable housing. The panel includes two architects: John Bencich and Scott Ball; and two non-profit home builders: Pete Hayley and Shelly Patton. The panelists will bring forward interrelationships among issues such as style, cost, sustainability, and design.

This panel is held in conjunction with the exhibition of the HOME House Project: The Future of Affordable Housing at the Museum of Design Atlanta (MoDA). This exhibit features award winning and innovative designs for affordable, single-family homes from a competition organized by the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Launched in 2003, the HOME House Project challenged designers and architects to create, on paper, affordable homes that were both well-designed and environmentally friendly. The open competition drew 440 entries from the US and six other countries, all using three- and four-bedroom house plans from Habitat for Humanity as a point of departure. The exhibit opened January 26th at the Museum of Design Atlanta, and will remain open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am – 5 pm until March 2006.

About the Panelists

SCOTT BALL is the founder of M. Scott Ball Design, LLC, an Atlanta-based housing and community design firm. Their clients include the Atlanta Regional Commission, Atlanta Regional Health Forum, Alex Garvin Associates, Inc., Enterprise Foundation, the Mississippi Renewal Forum, the Cobb County Board of Commissioners, and individual property owners. For six years prior to founding MSBD, Mr. Ball was Executive Director of Atlanta-based Community Housing Resource Center which worked closely with the City of Atlanta on neighborhood revitalization and affordable housing initiatives. Mr. Ball has extensive experience in zoning, property tax, mortgage lending, and affordable housing policies and has worked in both private architectural practice and non-profit community development. Mr. Ball is President of the Board of Association for Community Design, a national network of community design organizations. His educational credentials include a Master of Architecture degree from Yale U
niversity and a B.A. from Bowdoin College.

JOHN BENCICH has practiced as a registered architect in the State of Georgia since 1994. As the founder of Square Feet Studio with his wife Vivian, he believes that the primary component in the process of creating successful architecture is the collaboration between client, architect and contractor. His experience varies from managing the rehabilitation of State owned structures on Jekyll Island in cooperation with a private developer, to adaptive reuses of old industrial structures in the King Plow Historic District. John also has extensive experience with municipal processes including zoning variances, special exceptions, Neighborhood Planning Unit approval and Urban Design Commission approvals. John has also been a member of both the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Southern Polytechnic State Institute architectural faculty.

RICHELLE (SHELLY) PATTON is the Vice President of Project Development for Progressive Redevelopment. She heads up a team responsible for the acquisition, financing, and construction of affordable multi-family developments, which currently amounts to over 1,700 units totaling $127 million. Her expertise includes structuring complicated developments with multi-layered financing. She is active in advocacy efforts to promote affordable housing with the two leading networks of affordable housing developers in Atlanta, the Atlanta Housing Association of Neighborhood-based Developers (AHAND) and the Georgia Affordable Housing Coalition. She graduated with a B.A. degree in Sociology from the University of California at Los Angeles and a Masters in City Planning from Georgia Tech. She serves on the Boards of the Adopt-a-Grandparent organization and the Campus Ministry Board at Emory University.

PETE HAYLEY is currently the Executive Director and CEO of the University Community Development Corporation (UCDC). Mr. Hayley has extensive experience in assisting inner-city urban communities develop their redevelopment plans which include plans for implementation. Prior to UCDC, Mr. Hayley was the Managing Director of Development for the Atlanta Development Authority (ADA), where he worked with neighborhoods across the city to help them define their redevelopment plans and then assisted with identifying the resources and partnerships to implement those plans. Mr. Hayley was the project manager for the Historic Westside Village and helped form the public private partnership that created the vision for that project. Mr. Hayley is a native of Atlanta, Georgia and is a graduate of Georgia State University with a BA degree in Business Administration/Marketing. He has earned his Certified Community Economic Developer certificate from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC), is a certified Economic Development Finance Professional through the National Development Council and is the current President of the Atlanta Housing Association of Neighborhood-Based Developers (AHAND). Additionally, he has been an active licensed real estate agent/broker in Atlanta for over thirty years.
